Hurricane season starts June 1. The work that matters isn't done in September after a storm warning — it's done in May, when shingle suppliers are fully stocked and crews aren't booked three weeks out.
1. Tighten every penetration
Pipe boots, satellite mounts, attic vents — every one of them is a leak path waiting to happen. Have a roofer re-seal each penetration with high-temperature mastic, not the silicone caulk from a hardware store.
2. Replace any 'borderline' shingles now
If you've got curling, lifting, or missing tabs, the next 70-mph gust will take the rest with it. A small repair in May beats a tarp-and-claim ordeal in August.
3. Photograph your roof from every angle
Drone or ground photos with a date stamp. If you ever need to file a claim, this baseline is your proof that the damage came from the storm — not from age.
What to skip
Don't waste money on hurricane straps if your roof was built to current Texas code (post-2009). They're already there. Don't board up vents — that traps moisture and will cost you more in mold than wind ever would.
