'Lifetime warranty' is the most-abused phrase in roofing. In practice, three different warranties stack on every roof, and only one of them helps you when something goes wrong.
Manufacturer material warranty
Covers defects in the shingle itself — the rare bad batch. After year 10, coverage prorates fast. By year 20 you're typically getting 20–40% of replacement materials only, no labor.
Workmanship warranty (the one that matters)
Covers installation errors — exposed nails, bad flashing, mis-aligned valleys. This comes from your contractor, not the manufacturer. 5 years is industry standard; 10+ is a sign of a quality installer.
Enhanced (NDL / system) warranties
If your installer is factory-certified and uses a complete system from one manufacturer, you can get 25–50 year non-prorated material AND labor coverage. This is what 'lifetime' should mean. Always ask which warranty class your bid includes.
The transferable question
Most warranties survive one home sale; a few survive two. If resale value matters, get the transfer terms in writing before you sign.
